Show Me a Story

Hello friends! This weekend flew by! It was a lot of fun, and I loved not having to think about all of my to-do lists for just a little while. It was so nice! Now, it’s back to the grind, and get back to work and the real world. *sigh* It’s funny to me, because the past few times we’ve gone on “long” car rides (over 20 minutes is considered long to my chill’uns), they get really antsy, and the only things that keeps them from going crazy are playing on mommy & daddy’s iPhones, or having mommy/daddy tell them stories. I don’t really like letting tem play with my phones all the time, so I’ve been telling them fairy tales, some of their favorite books, stories from our childhood, and made up stories. They love it. My voice gets hoarse from all the stories! I actually told them stories on our drive to Bear Lake on Saturday for about 1 1/2 hours straight. Whoa. So when we were asked if we wanted to receive a copy of this new book coming out, and give one away to our readers, I said YES! I’m always trying to come up with fun activities and crafts for my girls, and they are still a little young for some of the activities, but my 4 year old especially loves it!

It’s called Show Me a Story, and the whole idea is to get the kids coming up with their own stories, and ways to tell the stories. I’ve been babysitting a 2 year old the past 2 weeks, and I was running out of fun easy ideas, so I opened this book and there was an activity to cut up some magazines and glue them to a paper, and then have the kids tell a story. My toddler was thrilled to cut up my catalogs and magazines from the mail, but somehow, all the stories had to do were with the Disney princesses, and other Disney things they cut out from my Disney Movie Club membership catalog. (I forgot to get pictures, sorry!) So I heard stories about Cars, and the Incredibles, and then princesses. But, they had fun, and I plan on doing more of them, especially during the colder months, and with my oldest starting preschool tomorrow (*sob* or HOORAY!! depending on the moment), I’m sure she’ll appreciate these activities more, and they could get her motivated to learn how to read too! So all in all, a very fun book, and I definitely will be using this a lot more.
Would any of you like to win yourselves a copy of this book? Do you homeschool, do preschool, or just do crafts/activities with your kids? You’ll probably love this book! Just leave me a comment below, and tell me some of your favorite activities you’ve done with your kids/students/grandchildren/what have you. We’ll have this contest go for a week (closing on Sunday night at 11:59 MST), and then we’ll announce the winner next Monday, September 17. US residents for winners only, sorry! Last little tip is there are a bunch of other blogs doing giveaways, and the main blog at Inside Storey is giving away a book! So you have tons of chances to win! Go here to see all the participating blogs, and for a second chance to win! Thanks for reading!!
Disclosure: I was given a copy of the book to review, but all opinions and thoughts are my own.
By the way, I have a few projects all finished that I’m SUPER excited about, so be sure to stay tuned!! Want a few teasers? Remember those pictures that are super close ups, and you have to figure out what it is? So it’s kind of a game! Have a great Monday!

My Memories Scrapbooking (& Giveaway!)

Okay want to know something ironic? I was unpacking scrapbooks (it may be plural, but don’t let if fool you. There’s only 2) last month (finally, it’s been 4 months?!?) and thinking to myself “Self, do you realize you haven’t gotten any professional pictures of your baby who is now 2 done? And heaven only knows if and how many pictures we actually have of the last 2 years with her in them. Seriously? You need to get pictures done, you need to do some scrapbooking, and you need to somehow make it work in your schedule.” That’s a pretty bossy thing coming from me. So I was beyond thrilled when I got an email from Liz with My Memories asking if I wanted to try out their software that is supposed to make albums easy. Um, heck yes! I used Adobe Photoshop to create things for scrapbooking before, but I’m always up for a new product. So I went ahead and downloaded the software (yeah, it’s immediate, awesome, right?) and browsed around My Memories looking at the cute kits they have available. And get this, some are FREE!! Woohoo! They also have a dollar store section. I mean, it looks like something for every budget is there! That’s my big beef about paper scrapbooking. You have to get pictures printed, have all of the supplies, and that means lots of storage that could go to fabric (see my priorities?) and then whenever you want to scrapbook it’s pulling everything out, making a mess, trying to glue with a toddler, whatever. So I LOVE digital scrapbooking. Plus, if you’re awesome and watch deal sites and such, you can get really cheap photo books to print your works of art. I use it to make Christmas/birth announcement cards, and then hold onto it for an awesome deal and can sometimes get my Christmas cards printed for free. So, do I have you convinced yet? Okay, here’s some awesome crap I made with My Memories software. (click the thumbnails to see my cuties bigger)

I’m hoping I have a few minutes today to upload my pictures and get my photo book printed. I’m pretty excited about it. I managed to do 26 pages (it’s an alphabet quiet book, see?) in a week, in spare time. The girls will hopefully love it, since what kid doesn’t love to look at pictures of themselves, and people they know? While using the software, here’s my honest review:

Pros:

It comes loaded with lots of papers, embellishments, etc. already

As I mentioned above, it has a lot of free kits and add ons to use with it

You can edit pictures somewhat when you add them to the page

It is pretty straight forward, and easy enough to figure out with just clicking around, at least for me

The pre-loaded templates are cute and fun, and it’s super easy to customize things to your liking

Cons:

It’s somewhat tricky to figure out how to print the book after it’s finished (meaning save it to the computer and then upload it to your printing method of choice)

You can’t do nearly as much editing with it as you can with Photoshop, so some things may need to be edited first

I have a bunch of things (papers, embellishments, etc.) I already had when doing scrapbooking with Photoshop, and I haven’t figured out if I can use them yet in this program. I’ll let you know

When you get your things from the online store, you have to download and install each thing individually. At least I haven’t figured out a way to download them all at once. So if you go crazy with the free kits (like me), you have to individually install them. After that, you’re fine

Potty-001

I just whipped this up from their free calendar template to help start potty training Thing 2. You know, places for stickers. I’ll probably print it on some pretty paper and call it good. It’s more than I did for Thing 1.

So, since I went through the uploading to print, I’ll tell you really quick how to do it. It has a nice feature where you can click on the “Check Album” and you can check album for errors, meaning hanging off the end, spell checking, etc. That’s a nice feature. You can view the photo album too on there to see how the pages look on layout (click on “View” View Album, and then choose whether you made a photo cover or not to make sure it's matched up properly). After everything is checked and ready, then you go to “Share Album”, “Export Pages”. Then you need to figure out on your computer where things are saved (mine was C drive, Users, my user name, and then a folder there for my album), and you should have a folder called whatever your album is called, and you just need to upload the JPGs to your printing method of choice. I’m still figuring out where to get mine printed, but that’s more because I haven’t had time to sit at a computer for longer than 10 minutes to actually upload and get it all ready to print. It’s easy, I’ve done it before with Photoshop. So, once I get it printed, I’ll show you the finished product! Plus, once I actually get some family pictures done, I’ll show you my awesome Christmas Card I’ll make…. Smile

Want to see the favorite page I did for this book? I shouldn’t have, but I think it’s hilarious….(click it to make sure it’s big enough to see…)

What I Wore Sunday: Week 27

Hey there!  Guess who won the giveaway?!
It was #10 according to random.org.
Who is #10?!
I now follow you both on Pinterest... I am hopelessly addicted:)
Carlee
www.ladybirdln.com
Congratulations, Carlee!  Email me your shipping address, and I’ll get this cute apron to you ASAP!
Thanks to all of you for entering!  That was fun.  We should do it again sometime!  :)
Before I show y’all what I wore on Sunday, I’ve got to show you something I just made.  I’m super excited about it, and I love how it turned out:
wedding veil
wedding veil 2
wedding veil 3
So, last Saturday, I went wedding dress shopping with a dear friend of mine.  I could.not.believe. how expensive the veils were!  I think the cheapest one we found was $85.00.  YIKES!
I looked at that and thought, “I could make that.  Easy.”
She let me try, and this is what I came up with.  I just used satin stitch rolled hem on my serger for the edges of the veil.  The top is ribbon rosettes with a small pearl in the center.  That is sewn to the veil, which is sewn to two white combs.  That’s it.
Guess how much this veil cost?!
SIX DOLLARS!!!  Woot!
Maybe I shouldn’t brag about that, but I was super excited about it!
Okay.  Onto WIWS…
frame to match teal and white
…52 weeks of shaking up the wardrobe…
The Rules:
  1. Wear a different outfit every Sunday.
  2. Incorporate at least one article of clothing or accessory that was either refashioned, sewn myself, or handmade.
  3. Outfits can be worn more than once; just not the same way.
Here’s what I wore:
week 27
Bleh.  I hate seeing pictures of myself.  Anyway, that is the skirt I made for Easter, with my super cute shoes from Amazon, and a cheapola shirt from Maurices’.  The detail on the shirt was fun.  Well worth the four dollars I spent on the shirt!

Birthday Celebrations Cont…

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy birthday to me!
Hee hee, I’m funny. Okay, so my hubby and I celebrated my birthday last week because we are actually in the process of moving. Right now. As you’re reading this. Wish me luck. Good thing for pre-scheduled posts, eh? Anyway, I was driving last week, and listening to my favorite radio station, while picking up an awesome free Craigslist item (can’t wait to start that bad boy!) and they were broadcasting at the City Creek Center in Salt Lake, that was opening that day. As I listened, I got the idea that it’d be fun to go and see it. So, we hopped on the FrontRunner train and rode to Salt Lake, then got on Trax (Utah’s public train/bus systems), and didn’t have to worry anything about parking! I took a bunch of pictures with my phone, so enjoy! (Disclaimer: I didn’t intentionally take pictures of random strangers. If you’re in the pictures, well, what are the chances!)
First store we stopped at was a tea store, since my hubby loves his herbal teas and mate. Gag. But, this tea was pretty cool.
City Creek Center (2)
See that little ball on the plate? You drop that in the water, and it turns into this huge decorative flower thing. It’s hard to tell, but it’s in the jar right by it.
Anyway, the City Creek Center (go here to see their website and everything they’ve got!) is 2 city blocks, that has a sky bridge to connect over Main Street in SLC, and has the city creek running through the middle of it. It’s an open air mall type place, and is 2 levels on both blocks. It’s BIG.
City Creek Center (7)
It’s got little ponds, and fish swimming around all through it.
City Creek Center (6)
See the creek?
City Creek Center (3)
It’s got a nice food court, and this fun area for kids play at. Funny thing, there’s a Disney store, but you have to wait in line to even go inside! It’s like a 20 minute wait! I almost thought I was in Disneyland!!!
City Creek Center (5)
A waterfall…
City Creek Center (8)
Fountains and splash pads to play in…While we were there, there was musicians, bands, and singers at different locations. Very cool.
City Creek Center (10)
It’s got a lot of very high-end shops, but there are some there for us commoners as well. Smile I took this picture just to send to my brother.
City Creek Center (12)
Pretty view of the temple across the street.
City Creek Center (11)
Wait, what’s that across the way?
City Creek Center (9)
Wait for it…
City Creek Center (13)
Oh baby!
City Creek Center (15)
The perfect place to get rid of the mean reds! (sidenote: the cute skinny jeans are from my awesome sister-in-law, the gray purse is from my other amazing sister-in-law, and the sweater is a steal from Miya Designs. If you live in Northern Utah, you should totally go there!)
City Creek Center (1)
And finally, the drool-tastic store of them all! We spent the longest in the store, and I snapped tons of pictures of things we loved, and price tags that were insane! Even more exciting?! There’s an Anthropolgie coming!!!
So, if you’re in Salt Lake, you NEED to go see this place. It was so fun! After, we walked down to 4th South and ate dinner at the Star of India. De-li-cious! We’ve been there before, but it has yet to disappoint. If you love Indian food, you must eat there. If you don’t love Indian food, you need to try it!!!!! We had Aloo Chat as an appetizer, garlic Nan bread on the side, Lamb Shahi Coconut Korma, and Chicken Tikka Saagwala. Oh baby, loved it. Then we walked back, rode the Trax & FrontRunner, and got home to girls in bed! (thanks Mom!!)
By the way, just because I feel like it, it’s my birthday, so I’m giving somebody a present! I have a $15 gift card for Great Harvest Bread Co. that I’ll mail to a random comment on this post (you should be able to use it at any Great Harvest). Answer these questions (1 comment total):
What fun adventures have you been on lately? Do you think the Crafting Cousins should have a Facebook page? What about Twitter? I’ll be honest, I’m scared and intimidated by Twitter. What is your favorite birthday traditions?
We'll end this when I have internet again, so Saturday night? 8:00 PM.
Thanks for reading!
By the way, I'm nowhere near cool enough for anyone I mentioned in the above to know who I am, much less pay me for it. I just love their stuff!
