Crafty Cousins: Super Hero Cape from a Tee Shirt

This cape is incredibly easy to make, and your little guy will just love it. You don’t have to do it for Halloween, but it works for a costume, too.

I’m actually planning on making a bunch of these for my boys for Christmas. Shhhh…don’t tell ‘em. I want it to be a surprise!

This cape is so incredibly easy to make. I didn’t even think of doing it as a tutorial until after I had finished it. So, just stick with me while I explain it with the help of Paint.

Start with a tee shirt. The bigger the better. The one I used was a men’s size 2XL. We are going to use the original neckline and hem of the tee shirt.

Cut diagonally down from the neckline to the bottom sides. If you cut both layers of the shirt at the same time, you’ll get TWO capes! Bonus!

Zig-zag stitch or serge the edges then hem it. This is what mine looked like. I just zig-zagged because I didn’t have any red serger thread, and I didn’t want white thread down the sides.

This is what the hem looks like on the outside of the cape. Steam press the hem so it lays flat.

Now, cut some ties from the sleeves you cut off. Make sure they’re the same length. Give the strips a good stretch so they’ll roll. That way you don’t have to sew or hem them. If you don’t want to use strips from the tee shirt, feel free to use ribbon, string, double fold bias tape or whatever else you want. Attach the ties to the neckline of the tee shirt.

Okay. You can leave it as is, or you can attach a logo. I did this the same way I applied the appliqué to this blanket, and I used this template from this tutorial from Sugar Tot Designs. I did have to make the template bigger, though. I made the logo from some knit fabric scraps I had, and I used interfacing to make it a bit easier to work with.

Once your logo is sewn into place, the cape is finished! Your little man will just love it. No kidding. Even my *almost* 12 year old wants one! (Gasp! He can’t be that old yet!!)

Get ready for hours and hours of Super Hero fun!
